Despite which political party is in power, the national debt rises. Here is the approximate increase in debt under various U.S. presidents: Ronald Reagan: 160% George W. Bush: 72% Barack Obama: 64% George Bush: 42% Donald Trump: 33% Bill Clinton: 28% Keep in mind that under the later presidents, the total dollar amount is far greater than that under the earlier presidents. For instance, Donald Trump's 33% amounted to roughly $6.7 trillion, while Ronald Reagan’s 160% amounted to about $1.6 trillion. Clearly, partisan politics has not been the solution to out-of-control spending.
