However, from an immunological standpoint, this claim is nothing more than a convenient substitution of terms. 1. The Protein Factor It is a biological fact: a classic allergy is an immune system reaction to a foreign protein. There are no proteins in tobacco smoke. The high temperature of burning tobacco completely destroys protein structures, breaking them down into basic elements. No protein means no antigen, which means no allergy. 2. Why the Metal Analogy Doesn’t Apply In debates, people often point to metal allergies (like nickel in watches) as an example of an allergy without protein. But that is a fundamentally different process. Metals act as "haptens": to trigger a reaction, metal ions must have prolonged and close contact with the skin to bind with the proteins of your own body. Only then does the immune system attack. Volatile smoke, which does not linger in the system, is physically incapable of forming such a bond. 3. Irritation vs. Allergy It is crucial to distinguish between a systemic immune response and simple physical irritation. • Irritation is a natural receptor response to microparticles (like dust, strong perfume, spices, or campfire smoke). It is a matter of individual sensitivity, not a medical diagnosis. • Allergy is a specific immune system malfunction. The myth of "tobacco allergy" was popularized as a tool for social pressure—a so-called "useful lie." If someone finds the smell unpleasant, it is a matter of personal comfort and mutual courtesy.
