Between The Ticks (b) Thousands of them. Millions. Every person who had ever stood in that impossible space between ticks. Daniel stepped back. One of them looked at him. A man in an old-fashioned suit. The man raised one finger to his lips. Then pointed upward. Daniel looked. A massive pendulum hung above him. It was moving. Back. And forth. Back. And forth. Daniel suddenly understood. The ticking wasn't measuring time. It was creating it. Every tick pushed reality forward. Every pause was the place where reality had not yet decided what came next. And Daniel was standing inside that pause. He looked at the door. At the world waiting on the other side. Then he looked at the clock. "What happens if I stop it?" The thousands of people in the clock turned toward him. The suited man smiled. For the first time, Daniel noticed that none of them were moving. They weren't prisoners. They were waiting. Tick. The pendulum swung. Daniel grabbed it. The universe screamed. Not metaphorically. Every sound that had ever existed erupted simultaneously. Daniel held on. The pendulum fought him. He thought of his mother. His father. His childhood. His mistakes. Every second he'd wasted. Every second he'd wished away. Every moment he'd wanted to last forever. And then he realized something. He didn't need to stop the clock. He needed to choose which way it moved. Daniel pushed. The pendulum swung backward. The clock shattered. For one impossible instant, Daniel saw everything. Birth. Death. Stars. Dust. Civilizations rising and vanishing. A child taking his first breath. An old woman taking her last. Every moment connected by an endless golden thread. And then— Tick. Daniel woke in his bed. Morning sunlight filled the room. The rain had stopped. The digital clock read 7:42. He lay there for several minutes, trying to decide whether any of it had been real. Then he noticed something on his bedside table. A small brass gear. It was warm. Daniel picked it up. On its surface were four tiny engraved words. YOU ARE NOT LATE. He laughed nervously. "Good." He put the gear in his pocket. Then he stopped. From downstairs came a sound. Tick. Daniel stared at the bedroom door. Another. Tick. Then silence. Daniel slowly smiled. Because this time... he knew exactly where the silence led. And somewhere in the space between those two ticks, something was waiting for him. TBC
