Chapter 2 (b) Another movement. He had expected terror, but what he felt instead was a strange calm. The first time had happened without warning. This time, at least, he knew what he was looking at. He stepped into the street. The rain had stopped in midair. Daniel walked beneath it, reached upward, and touched one of the droplets. It moved when he pushed it, just as before, but now he noticed something he had missed during his first experience. The droplets were not all frozen at exactly the same distance from the ground. Some were slightly higher, some lower, some barely beginning to fall. They represented different fractions of the same second. There was no single frozen instant. There was an interval. A tiny slice of time that had somehow become accessible to him. Daniel reached up and moved another drop. This time he watched it carefully after letting go. It did not remain perfectly still. It moved. Very slowly. The droplet descended perhaps a millimeter, stopped, and then descended another fraction. Daniel stared at it. Time had not completely disappeared. It was leaking. He looked around the frozen street and suddenly saw the same thing everywhere. The tree branches were not entirely still. A leaf trembled so slightly that it took several seconds to realize it had changed position. The fountain's suspended water was shifting by microscopic amounts. The hands of an analog clock in a shop window were inching forward so slowly that the movement could only be detected by staring at them. The world was not frozen this time. It was caught in the process of stopping. Daniel realized what was happening. The first event had been the moment after time had stopped. This was the moment before it stopped completely. He had somehow crossed from one side of the tick to the other. The thought should have frightened him. Instead, it filled him with curiosity. Daniel began walking. The farther he went, the more pronounced the effect became. He discovered that movement wasn't actually disappearing all at once. It was being lost in layers. Light seemed to slow first, then sound, then movement itself. The city grew quieter as he walked, but it never became entirely silent. A siren in the distance stretched into a long, low note. A passing car's engine became a deep vibration. The rain seemed to descend in tiny, individual steps. Daniel walked into the center of the city. The skyscrapers around him appeared unchanged, but the people inside them were beginning to freeze. He entered a coffee shop where a man had just lifted a cup to his mouth. Daniel watched as the man's hand slowed, slowed again, and finally stopped. There was something profoundly disturbing about watching time leave a person. Nothing about the man's face changed. He didn't age. He didn't suffer. He simply became fixed in the middle of what he had been doing. Daniel looked at his own reflection in the darkened window. He was still moving normally. That was the dividing line. Everyone else was subject to the slowing universe. He was not. He walked outside again and found himself wondering why. He had no special equipment. No explanation. Nothing had happened to him physically that he could remember. There had been no accident, no electrical shock, no strange machine. He had simply been present when the world crossed from one tick into another. Perhaps that was all it took. TBC
