My beloved border collie of 19 years just died today. Right or wrong, I chose to let her die on her own as opposed to killing her. For those who want to know, it was peaceful for her as she rejected food and then water. She just slept mostly. But I will say, the final 24 hours were not so good. Panting and vomiting. I slept on the floor beside her for days to comfort her and give her dignity by changing the bedding constantly. I stepped outside to text someone about her imminent passing and that was when she died. I have remorse she did not die in my arms like I wanted but when my nana died the caregivers said often people want to die alone. Maybe that was what she was waiting for? She was my faithful companion and I was hers for 19 years. I am not sure how I will function without her and would appreciate any words from someone who has been through a similar experience. Thank you.
