Cape Verde has been in the news a bit of late after their soccer team's feisty performance at the World Cup. This group of 10 volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa was uninhabited until the Portuguese came in 1462. It developed as a colony and supply stop for Portuguese ships on the way to India. Of course, the Portuguese brought slaves to the lush islands to work the plantations there.
