After World War 2, the trend in colonial Africa was to upgrade the status of colonies to "overseas territories" and grant more rights to the inhabitants...or...at least pretend to. Portugal did not have a good record with the treatment of their colonies and held onto them longer than many of the European nations (they did the same with the slave trade and slavery). Perhaps that is why most if not all of their former colonies quickly turned to communism (at least for a time) after being given their freedom.
