The rebrand will likely position Facebook app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more. This move is likely meant to signal Facebook's ambition to be known for more than a social media. The company says it is focusing on the next generation of technology including the idea of the metaverse. The tech giant is betting that the next big thing is a type of virtual world where everyone plugs in and interacts. The term metaverse was originally coined by sci-fi novelist Neal Stephenson. The tech giant set up a dedicated metaverse team last summer, and recently announced plans to hire 10,000 more employees to work on the metaverse in Europe.
