My opinion about the "4 day work week": I used to do labour work for up to 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week -- mainly in warehousing and production. I couldn't imagine those workplaces cramming the work into "4 days". It depends on the industry. ie: When I worked as a Stevedore at the port (Lascelles Precinct, Geelong), we worked 16 hour days for weeks straight, as it costs a LOT of money for a ship to be docked. We'd have 8 hours to go home and get some sleep and then we'd be on for another 16 hours. But once the ship was unloaded, we'd be off work until the next ship came in. We got taxed VERY highly for earning like $4000+ in 2 weeks. But we'd get big tax returns, when you factor in the off-time. I've been in both worlds: Long hours of gruelling labour and also office work doing tech stuff. This is why I am a hard worker, even when I am sitting in a chair -- because I've been though many years of gruelling work! So a lot of things I see tech people complaining about, I just laugh and shake my head. ie: working 8 hours, 5 days a week, predominately sitting in a chair in air conditioning is not a "hard job". Go climb up and shown ship hatches, dig product out with a shovel, and work under 1800kg aluminium ingots, swinging above your head under a gantry crane -- or work on "the chains" that weigh about 10-15kg all day, for 16 hours.. and then come to cry to me about having to work 8 hours in a chair with AC, lol. I've worked in many labour jobs where all the workers are treated with little to no respect. You have to be on time, EVERY time. NO excuses. You can't stop to talk. You have to be productive and don't stop moving ALL day EVERY day; and if you want a day off, good luck with that! I've been that guy. Just a number in the machine, working my ass off hoping I don't get sacked like the other 10 guys that month that couldn't keep up. And then, if someone comes over to you after 8 hours and says: "Hey, we need you for another 4 hours", you're expected to say "yes, no problem" or you won't get shifts next week. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. That's why I have a lot of respect for all the lowly shift workers and labourers of the world. They're not stupid. Many of them just didn't get a good start in life. I had to crawl my way out of all that BS and teach myself to do better. That's' why I have a VERY strong work ethic; even when I am working in an office. It was ingrained into me though my 20's & 30's with gruelling labour work, where I got no respect from anyone. And that's also why I am feisty today! It's also why I am TOUGH! .. and don't whinge about small things 💪 👷‍♂️ 🚧 ..and I get rather irrked with other people who've never had a truly hard day in their work life complaining about nonsense. They're too bloomin' soft! I personally think the 4 day work week is another ill-conceived idea that won't work. Even if people work 10 hrs, 4 days a week, it won't necessarily translate into productivity.
