#CERN Ditches #RedHat 🤔 #Linux After Hardware Compatibility Changes CERN, the research organization behind the #LargeHadronCollider, is moving away from Red Hat Enterprise Linux after newer RHEL versions dropped support for older CPU architectures. The change reportedly meant 47% of CERN’s specialized control computers would need replacement for RHEL 9, with another 17% affected by RHEL 10 — despite the machines still being fully functional. Rather than replace thousands of working scientific computers, CERN is shifting to #DebianLinux 😎, which continues to support the older hardware. The migration won’t be simple: CERN’s custom control systems, drivers, hardware boards and bootloaders will need to be adapted. But the move highlights a bigger issue in scientific computing: software support decisions can make perfectly functional hardware obsolete. Red Hat changed its hardware requirements. CERN chose a different path. src #TechnologyCouncillor re #OperatingSystems #Freedom issues
