Franz Liszt: Après un lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata Performed by the late Alfred Brendel The late Alfred Brendel was one of the great pianists of the 20th century. He recently passed away last month at the age of 94, and I thought that sharing this recording would be a suitable belated epitaph for the great maestro. Franz Liszt's "Dante Sonata" is one of the great works for the piano, requiring immense technical and artistic skill to play effectively. In my opinion, the vast majority of artists fall short of this piece, putting indulgent showmanship over musical integrity. Brendel, on the other hand, does none of that, being as restrained as possible while maintaining effective voicing, phrasing, and artistic structure. His Dante Sonata recording is my favorite of this particular work.
