My post seeking software apprentices is about the 10th down, and it's from November. I'm renewing the offer, with various commentary below. Are we collectively giving up on learning to code, given AI? Eric S Raymond declared the era of hand coding dead. This was several weeks ago on X. He also said for the foreseeable future there will be a need for people who are good at herding the AIs through coding, and that will generally still be us. For my tiny projects, I'm using AI more and more. I use Grok, and I have no basis for comparison with others so far. (That's another discussion.) I suspect I could still find a paid dev project on Craig's List of all places, if not other sites / methods. I could, but I'm trying not to do sales work. I'm trying to find other solutions for work, rather than solo freelancing. I'd probably only need to be 20% better at sales and people skills to make freelancing work. If an apprentice is slightly better than I am, we might both be able to make some and then more money. If not, having another person, even if they don't do people stuff, might be enough to get me moving again in that direction. I'll stop nattering. Elaboration on all this is scattered here and on my website, which is under my real name that I'm using here. My name makes for a UUID.
