Shame = fear of abandonment by tribe Guilt = fear of abandonment by God People whose dominant emotion is shame cannot feel guilt, because their shame means God has already abandoned them AND THEY DIDN'T NOTICE. Why is shame at the bottom of the emotion hierarchy rather than guilt, if shame does not generally result from a transgression? Because guilt warns of God abandoning you, while shame means you've already abandoned God. Guilt implies belief in God, and shame implies disinterest in the question entirely. Shame is the absolute disconnection between intentional action and its conjugate emotional rewards or punishments. The hierarchy of emotions doesn't pertain to how bad they feel, as that is a function of your spiritual level. It pertains to by *how long* you stay stuck at a given level, owing to the karma that is reflexively self-imposed in accordance with the "amount of spiritual power" inherent to your dharma. (Probably, negative entropy and degree of golden ratio fractal embedding.)
