About twelve years ago, I realized that the theology expounded in the Westminster Standards is essentially aligned with the theology I found in Scripture. So I decided to adopt it as my default theology. In other words, I hold to the Standards when I haven't fully clarified a position or worked out all the particulars of an issue. I don’t put the Standards above Scripture but I do put them above my momentary theological whims. I do think the language can be overly legal at times, especially in the Larger Catechism. I also think it would be good to add some clarifiers here and there (e.g. issues related to creation & anthropology). All that said, I find it to be a hard document to improve on. Not straying from the Standards has brought incredible stability to my life. I've watched a lot of folks bounce from tradition to tradition and fad to fad. I've seen people reject a position and re-accept it only to reject it again. And they do this all in the name of just "believing the bible." Avoiding all that has blessed my family.
