Ukonsaari (Ukko's island), or Äijihsuálui in Anarâškielâ (Inari Sami), is an island in Lake Inari in #Finland and an important sacred site. #Ukko was the most important male God among the Inari Sami, who call him Äijih. He was worshiped on this island up until the late 19th century. This worship included bringing deer bones and antlers into a cave on the island. In 1873 a 13th century temporal ring (decorative metal rings worn by women on the head, near the temples) from Eastern Russia was found in the cave. An old local told Samuli Paulaharju in 1932 that in addition to Ukko being worshiped on the island, a Goddess called Galguvaaran áhkku (grandmother of Galgu mountain) was worshiped on a nearby shore.
