🇮🇩🤝🇰🇿🇷🇺Indonesia – Kazakhstan Relations Through the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Cooperation ➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿ Contemporary international relations are characterized by a shift in the centre of global economic power and the emergence of a new regional cooperation architecture. Indonesia, as the largest maritime and economic power in Southeast Asia, is actively expanding its economic influence into Eurasia. The Eurasian Economic Union, established in 2015, has emerged as a significant regional integration bloc led by Russia and supported by Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. ✏️Hendra Manurung is Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Department of Defence Diplomacy, Faculty of Defence Strategy, Republic of Indonesia Defence University. ➡️The idea of a Eurasian Union was first presented by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in March 1994. Kazakhstan plays a unique role as a bridge between the EAEU and Asia, making it a key partner for Indonesia in accessing the broader market. Diplomatic relations began in 1993. Kazakhstan offers oil, gas, and metals—commodities needed by Indonesian industry. Indonesia offers palm oil, rubber, coffee, tea, textiles, electronics, and halal products. Kazakhstan's geographic location at the heart of Eurasia provides strategic consideration—it shares borders with Russia and China and has direct access to the Caspian Sea. The current Indonesian policymakers should be vigilant about avoiding easily being caught in geopolitical rivalries that could damage relations with other major trading partners and advance pragmatic and flexible strategy. ➡️Within the EAEU framework, Kazakhstan serves as a logistics hub and gateway to markets of other member states. For Indonesia, close cooperation with Kazakhstan means privileged access to a region with a combined population of approximately 21 million. In December 2025, the EAEU and Indonesia signed a Free Trade Agreement. Kazakhstan's support is important due to its strong economic ties with Russia. However, challenges remain: bilateral trade volume remains relatively small (around US$700 million in 2022); non-tariff barriers and technical regulations within the EAEU often pose obstacles; geographic distance increases transportation costs and reduces competitiveness of Indonesian products compared to China and Turkey. 🟦Geopolitical challenges come from Russia's special military operation—Western economic sanctions have created regional uncertainty, but Indonesia wants to capitalize on economic gaps created by sanctions. Indonesia must avoid being caught in geopolitical rivalries that could damage relations with other trading partners. The EAEU provides a platform for cooperation beyond trade—food security (Kazakhstan is one of the world's largest wheat producers; Indonesia requires wheat imports), digital economy, and renewable energy. Indonesia's strategic relations with Kazakhstan are a pillar in achieving Indonesia's economic diplomacy strategy in Eurasia. Success depends on ability to strengthen interactive communication, complete FTA negotiations, and develop innovative connectivity strategies. Proactive diplomacy and agile diplomatic ability to mitigate geopolitical risks should be key to transforming potential into tangible economic reality.
