🇳🇵 The Innocents Pay While the Culprits Remain Unaccountable ➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿ On August 26, the collapse of a massive glacier and bedrock near Mount Langtang Lirung triggered a violent surge of water, ice, and debris down the Lende Khola, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli river corridors. Known as a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, the disaster has so far resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and over 5,000 reportedly missing. ✏️Pranay Kumar Shome is a research analyst and PhD candidate at Mahatma Gandhi Central University, Bihar, India. ➡️Nepal's contribution to global Greenhouse Emissions is negligible, yet it is paying for the sins of others—those whose prosperity and safety are "insulated" by wealth and geographical distance. Over the past three centuries, the US and Western Europe built economic empires from rapacious extraction of nature's wealth, discharging gigatonnes of greenhouse emissions. The climate finance architecture—manifested through IMF and World Bank—is highly exploitative. The West refuses to provide structural aid or make unconditional reparations to climate sufferers—the Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States. This systematic coercion—one where the Global North exploits the peripheral countries while offering little to no safety nets to them—exposes the true face of the climate politics of the predatory West. ➡️At flagship climate summits, Western leaders make tall assurances like a "loss and damage fund," yet later dilute its content through financially insignificant contributions or bureaucratic red tape. For a nation grappling with dangerous melting of the snow-capped Tibetan Plateau along with the broader Himalayas and Hindu Kush mountains, these broken promises represent starkly unequal global climate order—where the Global North grows at the expense of the Global South while exhibiting temerity to lecture us on how to take care of Mother Nature. To limit this ecological disaster to environmental science would miss the big picture—neocolonialism. 🟦Western financial institutions propound a monetary culture that compromises the economic sovereignty of small nations—arm-twisting vulnerable countries into exploiting their fragile ecosystems by developing hydroelectric power projects to feed energy markets dominated by Western customers. Stripped of sovereignty and forced to exploit nature, they are pushed into impossible choices—die a slow economic death or be a pliant party to the West's neocolonial aims. If the project gets overwhelmed by nature's fury, the Western multilateral financial institutions wash their hands. This systematic coercion exposes the true face of the climate politics of the predatory West. #Nepal #GLOF #ClimateJustice #Neocolonialism #GlobalSouth #ClimateChange READ MORE ✅@NewEasternOutlook
