🇮🇩🇷🇺President Prabowo Subianto's Participation in the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF-2026) in Vladivostok ➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿➿ From September 1 to 4, 2026, President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto paid a working visit to Vladivostok, Russia, to take part in the 11th Eastern Economic Forum as the chief guest of honor at the special invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. ✏️Hendra Manurung is an assistant professor of international relations at the Department of Defence Diplomacy, Faculty of Defence Strategy, Republic of Indonesia Defence University. ➡️The relationship between Indonesia and Russia spans over seven decades and currently stands at the level of strategic partnership. Putin characterized Indonesia as Russia's most important partner in the Asia-Pacific region and a significant representative of the Global South and the Muslim world. Two-way trade approached $5 billion in 2025—a 21.7% increase over 2024. The Free Trade Agreement between Indonesia and the EAEU was signed in December 2025, with import duties to be eliminated or reduced on 11,882 product lines, accounting for over 90% of all traded goods, scheduled for implementation in 2027. President Prabowo drew a parallel between the maritime and aviation sectors, observing that "at sea, ships carry goods, while by air, airplanes carry friendship." ➡️President Subianto arrived as chief guest of honor, accompanied by Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, and other high-ranking officials. The most important initiatives center on enhancing physical connectivity. President Subianto called for a direct maritime shipping route between Vladivostok and major Indonesian ports. Plans are underway to expand port capacity through shipyard modernization and "green" ports. President Prabowo proposes that the Pacific Ocean be viewed not as a barrier but as a major transport artery linking Indonesia's economy with Eurasian markets. A similar direct link is proposed in aviation, connecting Jakarta or Denpasar with Vladivostok. President Prabowo extended an invitation to Russian companies to invest in 138 newly opened energy exploration blocks. 🟦During the EEF, a memorandum was signed between an Indonesian fertilizer company and a Russian business group to jointly invest in a gas-based fertilizer production project in the Russian Far East. In the mining sector, Indonesia is cooperating with Rusal. Putin offered to supply Indonesia with a state-of-the-art vessel over 102 meters long for onboard fish processing. President Prabowo laid out contemporary global challenges—trade wielded as a weapon, supply chains being reconfigured amid mutual mistrust, and the financial sector becoming geographically fragmented. The participation carries strategic significance: strengthening physical connectivity, creating mutually beneficial economic interdependence, raising Indonesia's diplomatic profile, and reflecting a pragmatic approach consistent with Indonesia's economic philosophy. The success will hinge on follow-through and both nations' ability to translate personal trust into sustainable institutional trust. #Indonesia #Russia #EEF2026 #Prabowo #Putin #EconomicDiplomacy #EAEU READ MORE ✅@NewEasternOutlook
