Gab's approach to privacy is deliberately narrow and concrete. Rather than a broad promise, here is what is actually true about signing up for and using the platform.
What Gab does not require
- No real name. You choose a username. There is no legal-identity requirement.
- No phone verification. An email address is enough to create an account.
- No VPN ban. Using a VPN or privacy-respecting DNS to reach Gab is allowed.
Advertising and data
Gab does not sell user data to data brokers. Free accounts do see advertising, which uses industry-standard measurement; GabPRO provides an ad-free feed. This distinction matters and is worth stating plainly rather than claiming the platform has no tracking at all.

What is public by default
Posts, profiles, and public group content are visible to anyone, including search engines. That is what makes Gab readable without an account — and it means you should treat a public post as public. Private groups and direct messages are not part of that public surface.
Controls you have
Accounts can be locked so that followers require approval, individual accounts can be blocked or muted, and words and phrases can be filtered out of your timeline. Private groups keep their posts inside the group. Direct messages are not part of the public surface. None of these require GabPRO.
Leaving is a control too. Gab provides a self-service archive export of your account, and deleting your Gab account is something you do yourself from settings rather than by asking permission.
Infrastructure
Gab runs its own servers and processes its own GabPRO payments in-house. The practical privacy consequence is that fewer third parties sit between you and the platform: no single cloud provider or payment processor is in a position to take Gab offline, and there is no external host holding the platform's data as a condition of service.
