Chronically Online
Last updated June 17, 2026
Chronically online is a term for someone who spends so much time on the internet — particularly on social media — that their understanding of the world is distorted by online discourse. They mistake Twitter arguments for public opinion, assume viral internet fights represent the concerns of ordinary people, and calibrate their worldview to the dynamics of online spaces rather than offline reality.
What it means
The condition produces characteristic distortions: the sense that certain fringe positions are mainstream (because they're visible online), that normal offline behavior is offensive or unusual (because online discourse has shifted norms far from the offline baseline), or that events that are important online are important in the world. Political strategists who run exclusively Twitter-brained campaigns often lose elections for this reason — their sense of what voters care about is shaped by a highly unrepresentative online sample.
The concept applies across political lines. Far-left Twitter, far-right forums, and mainstream liberal commentariat all produce their own forms of chronically online thinking — disconnected from the offline majority in different ways.
How it works on Gab
Gab's community is politically engaged and sometimes intense — a natural environment for chronically online behavior. The "touch grass" ethos is the corrective: acknowledging that online discourse, while valuable, doesn't represent the world at large, and that offline organizing, relationships, and real-world action remain the primary drivers of social change.
