Cryptocurrency

Last updated June 17, 2026

Cryptocurrency is a digital form of money secured by cryptography and maintained on a decentralized ledger (typically a blockchain) rather than by a central bank or government. Unlike bank deposits or PayPal balances, cryptocurrency transactions can't be reversed by a payment processor, frozen by a bank, or blocked by a government agency without extraordinary technical effort. Bitcoin, launched in 2009, is the original and largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

What it means

The decentralization is the point. A conventional bank account can be frozen by court order, seized by government, or closed by the bank for ideological reasons. A cryptocurrency wallet that you control with your own private keys (self-custody) can't be seized without physical access to those keys. For businesses and individuals who have been debanked, this is the financial equivalent of running your own server instead of renting from AWS — independence through ownership.

Cryptocurrency also enables global transactions without the banking system: someone in a country with capital controls or a collapsing currency can transact freely using crypto.

How it works on Gab
