Creator Monetization
Last updated June 17, 2026
Creator monetization refers to the mechanisms by which online content creators earn money from their work — advertising revenue, subscriptions, tips, merchandise, sponsorships, and direct patronage. YouTube, Twitch, Patreon, and Substack are the primary mainstream monetization platforms. Each has demonetized or deplatformed creators for political, religious, or ideological reasons, making monetization platform choice as important as content platform choice.
What it means
YouTube demonetization — removing ad revenue from videos without removing the video — is the most pervasive form. Videos covering firearms, religion, political controversy, or topics that make advertisers uncomfortable are systematically demonetized, sometimes flagging entire channels as "advertiser-unfriendly." This doesn't remove the creator's content, but it removes their income — a slower form of deplatforming that the platform can claim isn't censorship.
Patreon and Substack have both removed or threatened creators. Alternative platforms like Locals, SubscribeStar, and GiveSendGo have emerged as parallel economy monetization tools. Cryptocurrency donations bypass all of these intermediaries.
How it works on Gab
Gab supports creator monetization through direct audience relationships. Gab Social gives creators a platform to build and maintain audiences independently of YouTube or Twitter algorithms. Gab Marketplace provides a venue to list products and services — buyers contact sellers directly. Cryptocurrency in a creator's bio lets supporters send direct financial support without a payment processor middleman.
