Family Values

Family values is a term for the constellation of social and political positions that prioritize traditional family structures, parental rights and authority, protection of children from age-inappropriate content and political indoctrination, and the centrality of marriage and family to social stability. It's a defining part of the cultural and political identity of a large portion of Gab's user community.

What it means

Family values as a political concept became prominent in American politics in the 1980s and 1990s, associated with the Christian conservative movement. It encompasses positions on education (parental choice over curricula), media (opposition to age-inappropriate content), policy (marriage definition debates), and cultural practice (Sunday worship, traditional gender roles). The content of what "family values" means in practice varies by community and individual, but the general thrust is a defense of traditional family structures against what adherents see as cultural and institutional pressure to undermine them.

The term has faced significant criticism from the left as coded language for anti-LGBT or anti-feminist positions. Adherents argue that the substance — protecting children, supporting parents, maintaining cultural institutions — stands on its own merits regardless of political framing.
