Normie
Last updated June 17, 2026
A normie is internet slang for a person who holds conventional, mainstream opinions, consumes mainstream media and entertainment, and is generally unfamiliar with internet subcultures, in-group references, and meme humor. The term is used both affectionately (someone who hasn't been sucked into online rabbit holes is relatable and grounded) and dismissively (someone who accepts whatever narrative they're given without question).
What it means
The concept of the normie defines the in-group by defining the out-group. Internet subcultures — imageboards, gaming communities, political forums, alt-tech platforms — develop their own vocabulary, references, and shared assumptions that are invisible or meaningless to the mainstream. A normie doesn't know what a Wojak is, hasn't heard of the Streisand Effect, and probably gets their news from TV and newspapers.
The term isn't inherently negative — plenty of people use it self-deprecatingly, and "normie" content and humor is more commercially successful than niche internet culture for obvious reasons. The tension is that internet subcultures often feel they see things mainstream culture doesn't, and the normie represents comfortable ignorance of those things.
How it works on Gab
Gab's user base skews toward people who have already left the mainstream cultural consensus — politically, media-consumption-wise, or in terms of their relationship with Big Tech. The platform is not normie-hostile, but it assumes a degree of internet literacy and political heterodoxy that's slightly ahead of the mainstream curve. New users arriving from mainstream platforms often describe a period of adjustment to Gab's culture.

Red-pilling is the journey away from normie status. Based is its opposite. Chronically online describes the extreme of the spectrum in the other direction.
