Shadowbanning

Last updated June 17, 2026

Shadowbanning is when a social platform silently limits the visibility of an account or its content without notifying the user. From the shadowbanned user's perspective, everything looks normal — they can still post and see their own content — but their posts don't appear in search results, hashtag feeds, or other users' recommendations. The content exists, but effectively no one can find it.

What it means

The "shadow" in shadowbanning is the covertness. A regular ban is visible — your account is suspended, you get a notice. A shadowban is designed to be invisible to the target while functioning as a practical ban for anyone trying to find them. Critics argue this is worse than an outright ban: at least a ban is transparent, giving the person an opportunity to appeal or move to another platform.

Twitter's own internal documents, revealed in the Twitter Files in 2022–2023, confirmed that the company maintained covert tools to reduce the visibility of certain accounts — applied in ways that tracked political rather than policy lines.

How it works on Gab

Gab does not shadowban. Its moderation is visible: if content is removed, you're told; if an account is suspended, it's suspended. This transparency is a direct policy choice — the platform believes covert suppression is more dishonest than open enforcement, whatever the ideological direction. Gab Trends and search results are not manually curated to suppress viewpoints.

Related terms

Shadowbanning is a covert form of censorship. It's related to viewpoint discrimination when applied selectively. The chilling effect is what shadowbanning creates in those who know it's possible even if they can't confirm it's happening to them.
