Sockpuppet Account

A sockpuppet is a fake online identity created and operated by someone to simulate additional support for their own positions, attack opponents, evade bans, or manipulate discussions — while concealing that the fake account and the real account are controlled by the same person. It's named after the classic puppeteer technique of using a sock on one hand to create the illusion of a separate character.

What it means

Sockpuppets differ from pseudonymous accounts in intent. A pseudonymous account is someone using a different name to express their genuine views while protecting their real identity — a legitimate privacy practice. A sockpuppet is a fake account operated to create the false impression of multiple separate people holding a position — manipulation rather than privacy. The distinction is purpose: one protects the speaker, the other deceives the audience.

Sockpuppets are common in political campaigns, corporate reputation management, and among individuals who want to comment favorably on their own work or ideas without the obvious conflict of interest. Wikipedia has extensive policies against sockpuppeting for this reason.

How it works on Gab

Operating sockpuppet accounts to manipulate discussions or evade bans violates Gab's terms of service. Pseudonymous accounts — using a different name for privacy — are fine. The distinction is clear in intent: if you're creating a fake identity to deceive, it's a sockpuppet. If you're using a pen name to speak openly without professional risk, that's pseudonymity and it's permitted.
