Does Gab require a phone number?

Last updated June 17, 2026

No — Gab does not require a phone number. Creating a Gab account only requires an email address and a password. No SMS verification, no phone number on file.

Why phone numbers aren't required

Many platforms — Twitter, Instagram, Facebook — require or strongly encourage phone number verification because it makes accounts harder to create in bulk and links identities to real individuals. The tradeoff is that it ties your social media presence to your phone number, which can be a significant privacy and security concern. Phone numbers are tied to real identities, can be subpoenaed, and are vulnerable to doxxing if exposed.

Gab's choice not to require phone numbers reflects its commitment to user privacy and its support for pseudonymous participation.

Two-factor authentication

If you want to enable two-factor authentication on your account, Gab supports authenticator app-based 2FA rather than SMS-based 2FA — which is actually more secure, since SMS 2FA is vulnerable to SIM-swapping attacks.
