FAQ

How do I deactivate my Gab account?

Last updated August 27, 2026

Gab does not have a separate "deactivate account" switch that hides your profile temporarily and restores it when you log back in. What Gab offers instead is a set of narrower controls, and one of them almost certainly covers what you actually want.

Why people expect a deactivate button

Other social platforms use "deactivate" for a reversible pause and "delete" for permanent removal, so it is a reasonable thing to go looking for. Gab's own account deletion page adds to the confusion by describing deletion as removing your content and deactivating the account — but that wording refers to permanent deletion, not to a reversible pause. There is no state you can put a Gab account into and then simply log back into later.

What you can do instead

Make your account private

This is the closest thing to a pause. Your posts stop being visible to people who do not follow you, and new followers need your approval before they can see anything. Your account, username, posts, and existing followers all stay exactly as they are, and you can switch back to public whenever you like. See how to make a Gab account private for the steps. Of the options here, this is the only genuinely reversible one.

Delete your posts but keep the account

gab.com/settings/delete_statuses permanently removes your statuses, comments, and media while leaving the account itself intact. You keep your username and your follows, and your profile stays reachable — there is simply nothing on it. You confirm with your password, and like account deletion it cannot be undone.

Just log out

An unremarkable option that is often the right one. Logging out and uninstalling the progressive web app from your phone changes nothing about your account, costs nothing, and is entirely reversible. If your goal is to stop using Gab for a few weeks rather than to hide from anyone, this is enough.

Delete the account permanently

If you are certain you want to leave, deleting your Gab account is self-service at gab.com/settings/delete and takes about a minute. It is immediate and irreversible, so export your data first — that page covers the full process, including the separate route GabPRO members have to take.

Which option fits

If you want people to stop seeing your posts but intend to come back, go private. If you want your history gone but want to keep your handle, clear your posts. If you simply need a break, log out. Only choose deletion if you are sure, because unlike the others it cannot be reversed and your username is never released for reuse afterwards.
