Are Gab messages encrypted?
Last updated June 17, 2026
Gab uses HTTPS/TLS to encrypt data in transit — so your connection to the platform is encrypted. However, Gab's direct messages are not end-to-end encrypted. This means Gab's servers can, in principle, read the content of DMs, and that content could be subject to a lawful subpoena.
What HTTPS means
HTTPS encrypts the connection between your device and Gab's servers — protecting your data from being intercepted on your local network (coffee shop Wi-Fi, your ISP). This is standard practice for all reputable websites and prevents most casual eavesdropping.
What end-to-end encryption means
True end-to-end encryption (E2EE) means messages are encrypted on your device and can only be decrypted by the recipient — the server never sees the readable content. Signal and iMessage use E2EE. Gab's DMs currently do not.
What to use instead for private conversations
If you need genuinely private conversations that the platform cannot read and that won't be accessible via subpoena, use a dedicated E2EE messaging app. Signal is the gold standard — free, open source, and audited by independent security researchers. For group chats, Signal also supports groups with E2EE.
Gab's direct messages are fine for social coordination — planning meetups, sharing links, casual back-and-forth. For anything sensitive, Signal.
